A full piano keyboard has 88 keys – how are you supposed to remember all those notes? Here I’ll show you the quickest and easiest way to learn the notes on the keyboard. Should you label the keys? What are the advantages – and what are the dangers?

Why You Shouldn’t Label the Keys

What I definitely wouldn’t recommend is something many beginners do: writing the note names on the keys or putting stickers on them. There are also lots of apps and books that keep handing you this tiny piece of information – which note a key is, what a note is called. With that kind of help, you may make quick progress at first, but only at a very basic level. Later on, many of these players never really know the notes and never learn to read music properly, because they never truly learned the notes in the first place. I’d like to save you from that.

How Can I Memorize the Notes Without Labels?

There’s a simple trick. Most people start from C and go up – that’s the most common way, because the C major scale is the easiest to play: it uses only white keys. Let’s do it a little differently:

Find a group of two black keys. The white key directly to the left of it is C.

From C, go down two white keys. Now you’re on A.

From A, play the white keys upward and say their names out loud: A, B, C, D, E, F, G. It’s nothing other than the alphabet!

After G, the sequence simply starts over again with A.

Practice the Notes Separately – Just 2 to 3 Minutes

Learning these seven note names by heart is no big deal. Every time before you sit down to practice, simply take 2 to 3 minutes and tell yourself: now I’m only learning the notes. What matters is that you do this separately – not combined with a piece or any other exercise. Focus your mind entirely on this one simple thing. After a few minutes, you’ll know it. I’m sure that as an adult, you’ve already taken in far more complex information than this.

Test Yourself Until the Notes Come Instantly

Then test yourself: point to keys in random order and name them – B, D, C, G, F, A … – faster and faster, until each name comes to you instantly. If someone woke you up at 2 a.m. and asked you your name, you’d know it right away without having to think. That’s exactly how well you should know the notes on the keyboard.

One Octave Is All You Need

One last small trick: once you know this section of the keyboard, you also know all the other notes, because the same seven notes simply repeat across the whole keyboard. So you only need to learn this one group of notes, and you’ll be able to find every note on all 88 keys. That makes everything much easier right away.

Order your free Piano Starter 1 trial lesson here!

This 3-Minute Piano Practice is all about one question: how do you learn the piano keyboard notes by heart – quickly and for good?
