I’ll show you in a short and simple tutorial. Let’s look at the keyboard. Starting from the usual reference point in the middle of the keyboard and moving up, we find the note G – the white key between the first and second black key of the group of three. Place your right hand so that your thumb is on this G. Then skip one white key and play the next one, skip another white key and play the next one again. This gives us the G major chord in its simplest form, the so-called root position.

The root position

You can place this root position anywhere on the keyboard. Just remember the pattern: the lowest note is between the first two keys of a group of three black keys. You can also play the G major chord here, with the left hand – that works too. We can also play it here, or here, or here and here. Down here it doesn’t sound good anymore – it is a bit muffled, although the sound just about works. These are all G major chords in their simplest form.

If I go a step further, we can also play this G major chord a little differently. We use so-called inversions. If I play the G major chord so that the lowest note is played one octave higher, I get this: I have simply moved the lowest note up. That is the first inversion. Here I have the second inversion. And here I am back at the root position. These inversions can be played all over the keyboard, just as you like, with the left or the right hand. Of course this takes a bit of practice. But once you have it down, it becomes super easy. And there is one more trick.

With the Zapiano® Method I always teach holistically. Part of this is learning things with your mind. If I look at this G major chord, it contains certain notes: this is G, this is B and this is D. So I have the notes G, B and D. Once you know the names of the notes of the G major chord and you know the notes on the keyboard, you can suddenly arrange the chord (you can find more information here) in any way you like. B and D lie a third and a fifth above G – distances between notes like these are called intervals.

Doubling notes

You can also double the notes as you like. And suddenly you come up with things that might sound like this. It is all G major – and all super easy once you have practiced it a little. This is also a G major chord. It is also important that you hear what you play at the same time and perceive it correctly. Then you immediately have a deeper connection to the music, and over time everything you play will sound much deeper and better. In practice: when I play the chord like this – a little too high for me – try singing the highest note. The highest note is usually the one you hear first, so it is the easiest. Then try to hear the other notes as well.

In a wider context, the G major chord is often embedded in different keys. There are three basic possibilities. First, if I am in G major, it is the first degree. If I am in D major, it is the fourth degree. And if I am in C major, this chord is the fifth degree. You can see which notes belong to G major in the G major scale.

Order your free Piano Starter 1 trial lesson here!

How to play a G major chord Would you like to know how to play a G major chord?
