I’ll show you how in this short piano tip. Let’s take a look at the keyboard – it’s super easy. Place your right hand on the keys so that your thumb is on the white key between the two black keys. Your middle finger goes on the black key just above it, the first key of the group of three black keys. And your little finger goes on the white key between the second and third of these black keys. What these keys are called doesn’t matter for now. Just try playing it like this. This is the root position of a D major chord – the simplest way to play a chord on the piano.

Moving the D major chord

You can also move this D major chord around. For example, you can play it one octave higher – I can use exactly the same hand shape there. Of course, this works exactly the same way with the left hand. I wouldn’t play the chord like this much further down, though: down there it sounds a bit grumbly and muffled, not really good anymore. But in this range, everything works. This is the root position of a D major chord. If I want a deeper understanding of this chord, I can vary it a little. For example, I can move the lowest note up an octave. Then I get this: the first inversion of a D major chord.

The second inversion

Using exactly the same principle, I move the lowest note up an octave once more and get the second inversion of a D major chord. If I move this note up an octave as well, I am back at the root position. Suddenly we have several ways to play this chord. The same works with the left hand. These are all D major chords. Now you notice that a whole new area opens up where things aren’t so complicated anymore. If you know the notes of the chord – D, F# and A – and at the same time you know the names of the keys on the keyboard, you can arrange these three notes freely and you will always get a D major chord. By the way, these three notes are the first, third and fifth degrees of the D major scale – if you know the scale, the chord follows naturally.

Practice makes perfect

Of course, this takes a little practice. But once you get the hang of it, it all becomes super easy and you gain a deeper understanding of what is happening. With the Zapiano® Method I always teach holistically. That is why it is also important that you hear what you play. When you have this chord, try humming, whistling or singing the top note. Then you notice: okay, those were the notes. The more you practice this, the deeper and better your connection to making music becomes.

Would you like to learn more about major chords and see more short piano tips like this? At Zapiano® you will regularly find short videos with tips and exercises for playing the piano. There is something for everyone – just as varied as our courses. And the best part: at Zapiano® you are never on your own. You can ask questions at any time and even upload a video of your playing once a month.

Order your free Piano Starter 1 trial lesson here!

How to play a D major chord Would you like to know how to play a D major chord on the piano?
